LATEST: 92 new cases of virus are confirmed, meat prices could rise over plans to test workers
There has no further coronavirus-related deaths but 92 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It means the overall death toll as a result of the virus remains at 1,774. There are now 26,929 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic, according to the latest daily briefing from the Natioal Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The latest cases were confirmed as concerns were raised around the potential impact on meat prices as a result of plans to test workers at processing plans for the virus.
Cormac Healy of Meat Industry Ireland the told Oireachtas Committee on Covid-19 that delays in getting test results could impact on the prices paid to farmers.
Under plans announced by the Government earlier this week, six thousand workers at meat processing plants will be tested on a weekly basis for Covid- 19.
The industry isupports the testing plans. However Mr Healy told the Oireachtas Committee that the turnaround times for test results will have to be quick. He said any delay in testing could lead to disruption of the production lines which would mean markets could not be supplied and that, in turn, would impact on prices.
