South East University talks set to resume next month
By COLIN BARTLEY
TALKS aimed at creating a university in the South East region are set to resume next month.
The proposed merger of the Institutes of Technology Carlow and Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) into a new Technological University of the South East (TUSE) hit the rocks in June.
Staff members at IT Carlow voted against agreeing to a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutes earlier in the year.
It is believed the staff in Carlow have concerns regarding working practices in WIT which differ from those in IT Carlow, and the financial situation at the college in Waterford.
The merger would see the creation of a university with over 18,000 students and nearly 2,000 staff.
No application regarding the establishment of TUSE can be submitted to the Department of Education until a staff agreement is in place. It is understood talks between staff of the two colleges and the Teachers’ Union of Ireland will resume next month.
