National programme aimed at protecting hedgerow wildlife launched in Kilkenny

By COLIN BARTLEY

A NEW initiative aimed at protecting the habitats of insects, birds and animals who live in hedgerows has been launched in Kilkenny.

Teagasc Hedgerow Week 2019  was officially launched at Kildalton Agriculture and Horticulture College in Piltown yesterday by Andrew Doyle TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Over the course of the week, Teagasc will hold events for machinery contractors and farmers, as well as others who have an interest in hedgerows, demonstrating how to provide the ideal environment for birds and pollinators.

Speaking at the launch Minister Doyle said: “Hedgerows are important habitats for wildlife and play an important role in maintaining and improving the biodiversity in our countryside.

“I am delighted to launch this initiative and urge all farmers and contractors to follow best practices when maintaining hedges.”
