COVID-19 UPDATE: A further 16 pass away as Mater Hospital investigated over bulk reporting
A further 16 people lost their lives from Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland in the last 24 hours, the HSE said this evening.
The total death toll here is now 1,522 while the number of confirmed cases has now reached 23,956 after another 129 were diagnosed.
There have been a further 15 deaths as a result of coronavirus in Northern Ireland, bringing the official total to 469.
Meanwhile, the Mater Hospital is being investigated in relation to the reporting of 244 cases which were only reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre yesterday.
In a statement, the hospital said it met all legal requirements in providing the HSE with its Covid-19 positive results.
“The Mater Hospital has reported all cases of Covid-19 positive results to the relevant authorities on a daily basis. At all times the Mater Hospital provided the information that the HSE required and met all legal requirements to report infectious diseases. All of this information is correct and up to date.
“We are working with the HSE to understand why the provided data may not have been accurately captured,” it added.
It is understood the cases in question relate to staff members from the Mater.
