Kilkenny misses the cut: Just one of our golf courses makes Ireland’s top 100 list
Just one golf course in county Kilkenny was deemed good enough to make the Top 100 Golf Courses in Ireland list for 2020.
The bible of world golfing, the magazine Golf Digest, this week released their Top 100 in Ireland list and it was meager pickings Cat’s chippers as just Mount Juliet Estate and Golf Resort made the cut of all the courses in the county.
The beautiful course on the outskirts of Thomastown moved up one place this year to number 18 and remains in the Top 20 overall. It also ranked at number three on the list of best Parkland Courses in Ireland.
Commenting on the course, Golfer Digest said: “This stunning Jack Nicklaus design is the third highest-ranked parkland course on the list for good reason.
“It has hosted many high profile events over the years including two WGCs, won by Tiger Woods and Ernie Els respectively.
“When Tiger won in 2002, he said the greens were the best he’d played on all year which is testament to the quality of this picturesque but challenging layout, seamlessly blended into the landscape of this old estate.”
The Golf Digest Top 100 Ranked Golf Courses has been in full swing since 2006 and is the definitive listing for Irish golf courses both north and south.
The top five in the country are:
1 Royal County Down |
2 Royal Portrush Golf Club |
3 Portmarnock, |
4 Lahinch Golf Club |
5 Tralee Golf Club |
