Council to rule on plans for new religious cultural centre in Kilkenny city
A decision on whether a religious group can build an education and cultural centre in Kilkenny city is expected to be made this week.
The Kilkenny Christian Centre is hoping to get approval for its plans for a new building on the site of the former Kilkenny Stoves showroom on Dean Street.
Plans for the centre were lodged with Kilkenny County Council in October 2020. However, the local authority subsequently reverted to the Christian Centre seeking more details on parking and the material being used in the construction of the centre.
The group recently provided the council with greater detail on their plans for the building and surrounding area.
The Kilkenny Christian Centre is a group of lay people from different Christian denominations, Protestant and Catholic, who share a common objective to help make positive changes in society and to engage with young people.
As part of the plans, the Christian Centre is looking for a change of use to the 354 mt sq building from retail use to cultural or educational use.
The plans call for an extension to the existing building which includes an external lift shaft, first-floor extension, and balcony, alterations to the window and door fenestration, as well as the erection of external signage and lighting.
A decision on whether the centre gets the go-ahead is due to be made by the end of this week.
