Council gives green light for large new car park in heart of Kilkenny city-centre

The regeneration of Kilkenny’s historic city-centre continues apace with the approval of a new car and coach park.

Kilkenny County Council gave the green light to a request from the Kilkenny Abbey Quarter Development Partnership seeking permission to build a new parking facility at the former Smithwicks Brewery at St Canice’s Place.

The permission grants a seven-year licence for a temporary car park that will be able to accommodate 120 vehicles and seven coaches within the new Abbey Quarter Development.

Parts of the urban park, including a new skate park for the city, have already been completed. Meanwhile preparations to create a new thoroughfare connecting the Abbey Quarter to the city-centre are at an advanced stage.

The landmark Abbey Quarter development will contain housing, offices, an innovation centre, community leisure areas, an education campus and a new city library when the development is completed.
