LATEST: Kilkenny among 2,608 new cases of virus as 51 further deaths confirmed
A further 61 people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 2,488 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 2,768. There have now been 179,324 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 1,019 in Dublin, 204 in Cork, 135 in Donegal, 132 in Galway, 131 in Kildare, and the remaining 987 cases are spread across all other counties., including 15 further infections in Kilkenny.
These figures come on the same day An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar warned that the country is “nowhere near where we need to be at present” to be able to consider easing Level 5 restrictions at present.
This was echoed by Taoiseach Michéal Martin when he appeared on Virgin Media’s Ireland AM, when he said “I think it will be well into the next month” before restrictions could be eased, due the the figures we are seeing at present.
Also today, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly confirmed all adults in Ireland will have received at least one jab of the vaccine by September. No date was announced for the roll of a children vaccine.
