WEEKEND WEATHER: It’s baad! Kilkenny braced for Big Freeze with spells of sleet and snow
Break out the big coats if you’re venturing outside in Kilkenny this weekend, because freezing sub-zero temperatures are on the way.
The mercury plummet to a teeth-rattling -4 degrees in parts of the country last night, leading into a cold weekend with spells of snow and sleet expected.
Today will be cold but sunny, with expected to escape heavy showers expected along the Atlantic coast.
A Met Eireann advisory remains in place for all 26 counties until 11.59pm on Sunday.
The advisory said weather conditions will become “increasingly wintry for the rest of the week”, adding: “Risk of frost and icy conditions, with falls of sleet or snow at times.”
Weather experts are predicting more snow in the coming days and possibly even at the start of next week as a bitterly cold snap hits.
Met Éireann said: “Friday night will be very cold with frost and icy patches developing.
“Some fog patches also. Most areas will be dry. However, wintry showers will continue in the northwest overnight. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees.”
And tomorrow isn’t looking to be much different, with bitter cold and sunny spells expected.
There will be some snowy showers in in the west of the country which will move eastwards throughout the day.
The national forecaster added: “Saturday will be cold with sunny spells. Much of the country will be dry. However wintry showers will affect the west and north. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with light westerly breezes.
