Kilkenny anglers urged to help survey on fish populations in our rivers
A new survey is taking place in Kilkenny’s rivers to determine the current plight and health of their fish populations and they are calling on the help of local anglers.
The Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) survey will also look into the stocks of less well-known fish species that frequent the county’s waterways.
The survey is being conducted as part of the multi-national European project DiadES will assess the condition of species such as salmon, shad, flounder, mullet, smelt and river sturgeon – species that that spend much of their life at sea.
Dr William Roche, Senior Research Officer at Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: ‘We are urging anglers who fish for these species to participate in this online survey as it will help us get a more comprehensive view of these less common species in Irish waters.
“In this way we can contribute to providing better information to inform future policy and management of these species, and the economic, social and cultural activities associated with them,” Dr Roche added.
The DiadES case study area covers the Suir, the Nore and the Barrow Rivers as well as Waterford Harbour and estuary and can be filled in by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DiadES_IRL.
