‘Guests can feel like they’re truly on holiday’ in Kilkenny student’s designer bathroom

A talented young county Kilkenny woman has been named as one of the winners in the 2022 SONAS Bathroom of the Year competition.

Caoimhe Murphy, from Inistioge, came second place in the Technological University Dublin 2022 SONAS Bathroom Design of the Year in a competition held in association with the Interiors Association of Ireland.

Students of the Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design, led by one of Irelands best known Interior Designers Neville Knott, were tasked to create a luxury bathroom for a contemporary hotel.

Neville Knott said “This has been a really exciting competition for our students. As SONAS Bathrooms are the largest supplier of bathroom products in Ireland, there has been great opportunities to explore a variety of themes and styles in bathroom design with products from their extensive range. Working on real life projects is always a great experience for tomorrow’s designers and these students have really risen to the occasion with a wide range of amazing designs. I extend my congratulations to Caoimhe.”

Caoimhe, a past pupil of Loreto Kilkenny, said of her work: “This warm toned bathroom is a cutting-edge example of relaxation and creates a space where escapism is possible.  Guests can feel like they’re truly on a holiday and in a special space like no other with a unique design of materials and layout.

“They can enjoy the pleasure of both a bath and shower with plenty of counter and storage space for their belongings.  It is fitted out using black products with compliment of orange tones in the room.  Open shelves between the main area and shower allow guests to pass products to each other without getting wet and a heated towel rail is provided.  A screen which can be specified to adapt between clear and frosted for added privacy, divides the bath from the sink.  The bathroom is lit with dimmable warm lighting from the recessed spotlights above and warm LEDs in the open shelving and under the vanity unit.  This creates a cinematic ambiance but also allows for brighter light if needed. ”
