Kilkenny’s old cinema will not close, despite opening of 12-screen IMC theatre

THE old cinema on Gaol Road will not be shut down, despite the opening of the new 12-screen IMC movie theatre on Barrack Street last week, management told KilkennyNow.ie.

The new IMC Cinema, which employs 35 people, opened to the public last Friday.

The IMC management did not provide exact figures for their opening weekend, but said they were “delighted” with the initial response from the public.

Cinema manager Rachel told KilkennyNow.ie: “We are overwhelmed by the positive feedback we have received so far. IMC have put a lot of time and effort into creating an unforgettable cinematic experience for everyone who visits. So far our customers love the comfy new leather seats and luxurious interior.”

Just five of the IMC Cinema’s 12 screens are open at the moment, but management said more will open over the coming weeks. Upcoming films to screened include the Avengers End Game, Aladdin and The Lion King.

Meanwhile, an IMC spokesperson has also insisted there are no plans to close the old cinema on Gaol Road (pictured below).

The spokesperson told KilkennyNow.ie: “We believe that the new IMC will cater to both Kilkenny locals and surrounding catchment areas as there is parking available and it’s in a good location.

“The old Kilkenny cinema would have a lot of loyal customers who have gone there for years and know the staff, so we think the old cinema will still do well. We have a few other cinemas in close proximity to each other and we have found that they can work simultaneously.”
