The 27-year-old was arrested a short time after a car parked on Wolfe Tone Street was broken into at 1.20pm on Sunday.
CCTV footage captured in the area showed a male acting suspiciously and later walking away from the car with a number of items.
Gardai located the suspect a short distance away with the stolen items in his possession. He was arrested and taken to Kilkenny Garda Station where he was charged. He is due to appear before Kilkenny District Court on May 7.
Kilkenny gardai are also investigating two other car break-ins that occurred overnight between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The window of a car parked in the Michael Street area of the city was smashed and a small amount of cash was taken from the vehicle.
Meanwhile, a number of valuable items and electrical tools were taken from a vehicle that was parked in a private car park off John Street.
Gardai confirmed to KilkennyNow.ie that the vehicle was unlocked that and several items – including a cordless drill, air compressor, iPod and iPhone charger – were stolen.
Local Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Peter McConnon urged car owners not to leave “property on display” and to keep their vehicles locked at all times.
