BUSTED: Kilkenny gardai arrest man caught with €500k of cannabis stuffed in car boot

KILKENNY gardai have arrested a man after they seized €500,000 worth of cannabis stuffed into black sacks in the boot of his car.

The foreign national was stopped by gardai as he was driving along the M9 motorway at Templemartin at around 10am.

A quick search revealed the entire boot of the suspect’s vehicle was filled with a huge quantity of herbal cannabis crudely concealed in black sacks.

The man, who is in his 30s, was arrested and taken to Kilkenny Garda Station where he is currently being detained under the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardai told KilkennyNow.ie the illegal drugs have an estimated street value of €500,000 and were destined for sale in Kilkenny city.

The seizure – the biggest of its kind in the city or county for months – was a planned joint operation involving Kilkenny-Carlow and Wexford Garda Divisions investigating the sale and supply of illegal controlled drugs throughout Kilkenny and the South East.

Kilkenny gardai this evening said “investigations are ongoing” in relation to today’s haul.

It is the latest in a series of successful drug busts made by local gardai since the beginning of the year.

Late last month gardai seized €8,000 worth of cannabis when they uncovered a “sophisticated” cannabis grow-house in the city-centre. And this came in the wake of two other drug busts made in the city over the previous fortnight.
