COVID-19: 230 confirmed cases in Kilkenny, restrictions to remain in place as death toll rises
There are now 230 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Kilkenny and the rising number of Covid-19 related deaths has cast serious doubts on whether restrictions will be lifted from next week.
Reports this morning suggest the Covid-19 restrictions may not be lifted at all – or only eased slightly – from next week due to concerns at the high number of new cases being recorded.
In total 1,087 have people have died from the virus, with 19,262 confirmed cases across the country.
As the partial lockdown continues, senior Government sources have reportedly played down the prospect of any major easing of restrictions next week.
It is expected strict rules, including the close of non-essential shops as well as 2km limits on exercise and cocooning for over 70s, will all remain in place beyond next Tuesday.
Decisions will be taken by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) later this week on what restrictions, if any, can be eased or lifted.
These include allowing over 70s to leave their homes for exercise and more flexibility on 2km limit for others going for walks or runs.
Garden centres and DIY centres where social distancing can be maintained are also regarded as businesses that could reopen in the early phases of relaxed restrictions.
