COVID-19 LATEST: Almost 1,000 new cases confirmed, largest one-day increase so far
Twenty-eight more people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 936 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 794. There are now a total of 17,607 cases of Covid-19 in the country.
The latest fatalties are a significant reduction on previous days, but the number of confirmed cases is the largest one-day increase so far.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar earlier warned there is a real risk that control could be lost over the spread of coronavirus in Ireland if people become lax about preventative measures.
Speaking as the Dáil began debating the Government’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis, the Taoiseach said complacency is “the new enemy”.
Mr Varadkar said extreme vigilance is required and everything must be done to avoid a second wave of Covid-19.
Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said getting people back to work is “a central focus” of the recovery.
He told the Dáil employment is expected to grow by 5.5% next year, meaning an additional 115,000 jobs, and that would reduce the unemployment rate to below 10%.
