Getting connected: 22,000 homes and business across Kilkenny can now access high-speed broadband
More than 22,000 homes and businesses across Kilkenny can now access gigabit fibre broadband, according to new data released by Eir.
It comes as the telecommunications company released its first ever comprehensive Economic and Social
Impact Report, highlighting that the company has invested almost €1.7 billion in infrastructure in the past six years.
Eir has also announced a further €500 million investment to expand its fibre network across Ireland.
The company said its fibre build project “is already 77% complete in Kilkenny”, and that 22,229 homes and businesses in the city and county now have access to high-speed fibre connection.
It added a total of €13.7 million has been invested into the Kilkenny network.
A spokesperson said: “On completion, the network will serve 28,804 premises across the county of Kilkenny, facilitating broadband speeds up to 100 times faster than a traditional copper network.”
In addition to this investment, the company said it has made “a multi million euro investment” to upgrade 53 mobile sites across Kilkenny over the past four years.
The spokesperson said the telecommunications company is also supporting the Government’s National Broadband Plan in Kilkenny “through the use of several thousand of its poles to facilitate the rollout of rural fibre”.
They added the company’s “continued investments, in tandem with the Government’s National Broadband Plan, aim to ensure that by the end of 2028, every home and business in Ireland – covering
over 2.4 million premises – will have access to high-speed gigabit broadband. This effort promises to bring transformative connectivity to communities nationwide, empowering Ireland’s digital future.”
