Just one more virus-related death recorded here as lockdown restrictions are eased across Europe

One more person has died after contracting the coronavirus as 77 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

It brings the overall number of deaths as a result of the virus to 1,650. There are now 25,062 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The relatively low number of fatalities and new cases come as lockdown conditions were eased across Europe.

Terraces throughout the Netherlands filled quickly today as bars and restaurants were allowed to open for the first time in almost three months on a sunny public holiday.

As the number of new coronavirus infections in the country has dropped steadily in recent weeks, restaurants, bars, museums, cinemas and theatres were allowed to open their doors from 10am, as long as they follow strict social distancing rules to prevent a new rise in infections.

They are now allowed to receive a maximum of 30 customers at a time, who all have to make reservations in advance and need to be seated at tables with a minimum distance of 1.5 metres between them.

Meanwhile, Rome’s Colosseum has reopened after a three-month coronavirus lockdown,

The director of Italy’s top tourism site, Alfonsina Russo, said it had been “surreal” seeing the empty landmark during the quarantine, adding: “It’s a symbol of Rome and of Italy.”

Last year, an average of 20,000 tourists visited the Colosseum daily.
