Kilkenny Castle to build €1.7 million elevator to make it accessible to all
Kilkenny Castle will become accessible to everyone after it recieved €1.7 million in funding to build an internal lift and a disabled toilet.
Minister and Kilkenny TD John Paul Phelan welcomed the funding and confirmed work will get underway before the end of the year.
He said: “I am delighted to confirm a government investment of €1.7 million in Kilkenny Castle. This will fund an internal lift within the turret of the Castle, works which will not impact on the history or heritage of the building in any way.
“The finance will also help with the development of a new toilet for people with compromised mobility within the grounds of Kilkenny Castle. It’s a major visitor attraction in the heart of our medieval city and this additional funding will make it even more accessible for all.
“Planning permission will be lodged shortly and subject to approval, we anticipate that work will begin before the end of this year,” Minister Phelan added.
