LATEST: 1,789 new cases of virus as NPHET warns of another surge over coming weeks
A further 1,789 people have contracted the coronavirus, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.
Meanwhile, the number of people bring treated in hospital for the virus now stands at 360. Some 56 of these are being treated in ICU.
The total number of deaths of those with Covid-19 has also risen to 5,112, after the Department confirmed it was notified of 20 deaths in the past week.
Meanwihle, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) today warned Ireland could see a peak of 2,500-3,000 Covid-19 cases a day by mid September.
NPHET said that this may result in peaks in healthcare demand, with possibly 500-700 patients in hospital with the virus and between 80-130 in intensive care.
