LATEST: ‘Bumpy journey’ ahead as 1,179 new cases of virus confirmed

A further 1,179 people have contracted the coronavirus, the Department of Health confirmed this evening.

There are 91 people in hospital with Covid-19, 22 of whom are in ICU with Covid-19, no change from yesterday.

Health Service Executive chief Paul Reid earlier warned the country is in for a “bumpy journey” for the next few weeks due to the Delta variant of Covid-19.

Yesterday, the Department of Health reported 1,377 new cases of the virus, the highest number of recorded daily cases in more than five months.
