LATEST: Kilkenny among 1,269 new cases of virus as 13 further deaths confirmed
There has been 13 further coronavirus related deaths as 1,269 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 1,269. There are now 52,268 cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 221 are in Meath, 203 in Dublin, 116 in Cork, 80 in Cavan and 649 with the remaining 649 cases spread across all remaining counties.
The latest cases were confirmed as it emerged that new legislation to allow for fines to be issued for breaches of restrictions to curb the spread of the virus will be passed by the Oireachtas over the coming days.
The new law will pave the way for fines for those who hold house parties along with penalties for people who travel beyond the five-kilometer travel limit.
However, this legislation will not be in place by midnight tomorrow when the new restrictions kick in. This means the current penalty of €2,500 or up to six months in prison will apply for travel restriction beaches until the new law is passed.
