LATEST: Kilkenny among 306 new cases of virus as shops prepare to reopen for first time in six weeks

One more person has died after contracting the coronavirus as 306 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 2,053. There are now 72,544 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 108 are in Dublin, 30 in Limerick, 22 in Galway, 17 in Donegal, 15 in Wicklow, 14 in Cork with the remaining 100 cases are spread across 18 other counties, including nine more infections in Kilkenny.

The latest cases were confirmed as shops across the country are prepare to reopen their doors tomorrow for the first time in six weeks.

Level 5 restrictions will begin to ease tomorrow, with restaurants and gastro pubs following suit on Friday.

The Government said it expects to see new cases of Covid-19 increasing in two weeks’ time after the restrictions are eased.

However, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly insisted there is no intention to reimpose tighter restrictions unless there is a significant rise in cases.

The Government is urging people to be vigilant and to plan ahead for Christmas as safely as possible to prevent another lockdown.
