LATEST: Kilkenny among 650 new cases of virus as 57 further deaths confirmed
A further 57 people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 650 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed.
The overall death toll as a result of the virus has now reached 4,036. There have now been 211,751 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 192 in Dublin, 53 in Galway, 50 in Meath, 46 in Kildare, 46 in Cork and the remaining 263 cases are spread across 19 other counties, including five further infections in Kilkenny.
Commenting on today’s figures, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn said: “Although we have made great progress, the situation remains precarious.
“Almost 90% of cases in Ireland are the B117 variant. The increased transmissibility of this variant is apparent in the current profile of the disease in households, with one in three household contacts of a confirmed case testing positive for COVID-19.
“This underlines the need for people to exercise caution in households and other settings,” Dr Glynn concluded.
