Man, 70s, killed in county Kilkenny road tragedy

A man in his 70s was killed in a fatal single vehicle collision in Co. Kilkenny this morning.

The tragedy occurred at around 9.30am on the R448 at Smithstown, Mullinavat.

The road was temporarily closed as Garda Forensic Collision investigators carried out a technical examination of the scene. It has since been reopened.

Gardai this evening said the local coroner has been notified and that arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination.

They are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The single vehicle collision, involving a car, occurred at approximately 9.30am on the R448. The driver of the car, a man aged in his 70s, was fatally injured.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 030 5300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
