‘No more sting operations’ – Kilkenny TD urges colleagues

Kilkenny TD John Paul Phelan has said there should be “no more sting operations” among his Fine Gael colleagues.

Deputy Phelan spoke out at a party meeting ahead of last night’s vote of no confidence in Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney.

The Ferrybank-based politician was referring to an incident in which an unnamed junior minister set up a sting operation to establish if a Cabinet minister leaked details of former minister Katherine Zappone’s ill-fated appointment as a UN special envoy.

Earlier this summer it emerged the junior minister set up his senior colleague by pretending to be on radio station talking about the Katherine Zappone controversy to see if the other minister would tell a journalist.

Last night Mr Coveney survived the motion of no confidence. A Government motion of confidence in Mr Coveney, tabled in response to Sinn Féin’s motion of no confidence, was carried comfortably by 92 to 59 votes.
