Officers taken to Kilkenny hospital after driver rammed garda cars

Four gardai were treated at a hospital in Kilkenny after a driver smashed into several garda cars last night.

The incident occurred on the O’Brien Road in Carlow shortly before 9pm last night.

In a statement issued today, a Garda spokesperson said that, while on “active patrol”, gardai attempted to stop a car, which “failed to stop and was being driven dangerously”.

The vehicle then struck “several garda cars” before it was intercepted a short time later.

The driver, a male in his 20s, was arrested and taken to a garda station in Co. Carlow. He was charged in relation to the incident during a special sitting of Waterford District Court this evening.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed four officers were taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny for “medical assessment, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries”.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward, and for anyone with camera or dashcam footage “to make it available to the investigation”.

The spokesperson added: “Anyone with information is asked to contact Carlow Garda Station 059-9136620, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”

Gardai added investigations “are ongoing”.
