Kilkenny Castle goes green for St Patrick’s celebrations
Kilkenny Castle will bask in a green glow in the countdown to St Patrick’s Day as part of a colourful campaign to entice people outdoors again.
Our world-famous building is one of 42 historic and State structures across the country that will be “greening” up for this year’s five-day celebration of Ireland’s patron Saint.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) will light up Kilkenny Castle using green filters, specialist lamps, and the Castle and park’s existing lighting control systems.
The theme of this year’s festival is “Dúisigh Éire! Awaken Ireland!”
Tourism Minister Catherine Martin admitted this year’s national festival requires “a very different approach” but the Government is urging people to “throw off the long dark months and rise to embrace the brighter days ahead”.
Minister Martin said: “While some of the more traditional elements cannot take place in the current circumstances, St Patrick’s Festival 2021 presents different opportunities for innovation in delivery.
“There is an incredible opportunity for the nation and the world to take a front row seat at all of this year’s events and the greening of our landmarks will provide a visual spectacle for us to enjoy.”
