Fraudsters use Brexit confusion to target Kilkenny shoppers
Kilkenny online shoppers are being made aware of scam texts and emails circulating pertaining to be from courier companies asking people to pay additional delivery charges.
The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau has been made aware of the scam, which they say is taking “advantage of the confusion around Brexit.”
The scam works by sending emails and texts under the branding of various courier companies looking to cover extra costs.
The emails/texts request further payment to cover the additional costs of customs clearance brought about by Brexit before the parcel can be delivered. In some instances, Garda say, the emails/texts have been circulated in Irish.
Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau has the following advice: “Be careful, do your research, don’t rush in, ask yourself why me?
“Only use secure sites and make sure you are on the real site. Check the URL and look out for the trust seals (padlocked websites).
“Make sure to check these sites privacy policy, refunds policy and contact us section. Use trusted payment methods and never send cash,” Superintendent Cryan concluded.
