THE sound of feet tapping will reverberate across the city between now and Monday as the Kilkenny Trad Fest gets underway.
The Tradfest is a celebration of our rich musical heritage and boasts a spectacular line-up of some of the country’s finest singers, musicians and dancers.
A packed programme of events will take place over the bank holiday weekend, featuring local, national and international acts.
These include Altan, who will be performing in St Canice’s Cathedral, while world renowned Kilfenora Céilí Band (pictured below) will delight spectators in the Watergate Theatre with their spectacular show.
Orla Fallon, formerly of Celtic Woman, will perform at Anocht restaurant, while local favourites Reel to Reel will return to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Paris Texas. West Kerry’s legendary Séamus Begley will perform with Téada in the Set Theatre. Also performing in the Set is Inistioge resident Iarla Ó Lionáird and Steve Cooney.
The Tradtrail through the city, sponsored by Bulmers, offers music lovers the chance to experience a wealth of talented musicians and performers in the relaxed settings of Kilkenny’s finest pubs free of charge.
To celebrate our national language, Pop-up Gaeltacht offers Irish speakers of all levels to practice their cúpla focal at a fun and informal get-together at Bollard’s Bar, Kieran street at 8:30pm tonight.
Various workshops and masterclasses will be available over the course of the weekend, offering attendees the chance to learn the story behind the music, performers and their instruments. These include an Instrument Making Workshop with Kilkenny native Paddy Cleere and a Bodhrán Workshop with Tommy Lanigan.
