Thousands of homes without power as gale force winds batter country

UP to 10,000 homes and businesses are without electricity today after gale force gusts and heavy rain showers battered the country last night.

Kilkenny was hit by winds of up to 100km/hr, which uprooted several trees and left debris scattered on many roads across the county this morning.

AA Roadwatch urged motorists to take extra care when driving today and to watch out for wind-blown debris.

A Status Yellow wind warning issued by Met Éireann for Kilkenny and the rest of Leinster remained in place until 9am this morning.

The national forecaster said the weather is expected to be “unsettled and noticeably colder” over the coming days – with sharp frost and icy patches on the way.

Temperatures will drop further tonight – to as low as -1 degree in some parts.

Met Éireann said tomorrow night will be “very cold and wintry, with occasional hail, sleet and snow showers”.

Tuesday will be very cold with some further showers of sleet and snow.
