Tributes paid to popular Kilkenny hotelier after his sudden tragic death

TRIBUTES have been paid to hotelier Joe Comerford, whose sudden and untimely death has shocked his many friends and the wider community in Castlecomer.

Mr Comerford’s death was announced during the Easter vigil mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception last night in Castlecomer.

Just two months ago the popular businessman and his wife Julie opened the Avalon House Hotel in the town, bringing a huge boost to the area and providing much needed employment. They also founded the Academy Plaza Hotel in Dublin.

The Avalon House Hotel has already proved to be a major boost to the local economy.

Tributes were paid to Mr Comerford on social media today as news of his death emerged.

Erin’s Own GAA Club said: “Yesterday evening Erin’s Own lost a great patron and friend to our Club and Community. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Comerford and Coogan families at this sad time with Joe’s passing.”

Castlecomer councillor and publican Maurice Shortall described Mr Comerford as “the savour of Castlecomer”. Speaking on KCLR, Cllr Shortall said Mr Comerford was well-known for his acts of kindness and was hugely supportive of his local community.

Mr Comerford’s funeral details have not yet been released.
