Kilkenny triple murder horror subject of new documentary
One of the biggest tragedies in recent Kilkenny history is the subject of a new documentary that airs this evening.
TG4’s Marú Inár Measc, a new true crime documentary series, tonight looks back at the events surrounding the horrific murders of Sharon Whelan and her two young daughters in Windgap on Christmas night, 2008.
Sharon’s (30) body was discovered, along with her two young daughters Nadia (2) and Zara (7) after neighbours woke up to find the young mother’s house on fire.
As the bodies of Sharon and her daughters were pulled from the blaze, therefore preserving their bodies, investigators were able to determine that Sharon had not died of smoke inhalation and had been killed before the fire took place. Crucially, DNA evidence from Sharon’s body soon led Gardaí to a suspect.
Postman Brian Hennessy was subsequently arrested and charged with the murders. He was found guilty of the murders in 2009 and was handed three life sentences at his trial.
The programme features interviews with Sharon’s heartborken parents, Christy and Nancy, and Sharon’s older brother John.
