LATEST: 16 men found in container on ferry to Rosslare in ‘good health’, investigation gets underway

Sixteen people have been discovered in the back of a truck on a ferry that docked in Rosslare Europort this afternoon.

The ferry arrived at the Wexford port after leaving from the port of Cherbourg in France at 9pm last night.

The 16 men were discovered around 9am this morning by a member of staff on the ferry who heard banging from inside the truck’s container.

All of the people discovered are men aged between 20 and 40 years old. All are believed to be in good health.

Gardai and other emergency services boarded the Stena Line ferry as it docked shortly after 2.30pm, upon which the men received treatment and had their health assessed.

Sections of Rosslare Europort have been closed off to the public and the other passengers on the ship and the vehicles have left the ferry.

It is understood they will then be processed under Immigration legislation as gardai and immigration officials begin an investigation into the latest discovery of migrants being discovered in containers.

A Garda spokesperson said this afternoon: “An Garda Siochana are now investigating all the circumstances of this incident.

“The Articulated Truck involved in this incident has been detained.

“The driver and the owners of the articulated vehicle are assisting An Garda Siochana with our enquiries.”
