Just 390 new homes built in Kilkenny in year as housing crisis deepens

A NEW survey has provided detailed insights into some the factors underlying Kilkenny’s chronic housing shortage.
The Buildings Report for Q2 2019 published by GeoView this week revels just 7% of residential sales in Kilkenny in the 12 months up to April were new builds.
Just 390 new homes were built in the city and county over the same period.
The report also found vacancy rates in Kilkenny are among some the lowest in the country at 3.6%, compared to the national average of 4.8%. Only Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow and Waterford have lower vacancy rates.
Kilkenny is also one of just six counties in the country where the average house price is over €200,000.
Last year there was 54,709 residential properties were purchased in the state, an increase of 4.7% on the previous year.
The report is based on GeoDirectory’s comprehensive database of just over two million residential building records and provides a unique and up-to-date analysis of the Irish housing market.
