Ballroom of Romance – famous Kilkenny landmark set for new lease of life

By COLIN BARTLEY

ONE of Kilkenny’s last remaining Ballrooms of Romance has been sold.

The Carlton Ballroom right in Kilkenny’s city centre has changed hands after lying idle for since the turn of the year.

The ballroom, located just off the High Street between Collier’s Lane and Chapel Lane, has been bought for an undisclosed fee and by an unknown buyer, however, auctioneers Seamus Callanan, had the property listed at €240,000.

The Carlton, which has many a story to tell as it was one of Kilkenny’s favourite venues for showbands in the ’60s and ’70s, was until recently used for bingo and as a community hall.

The buyer is not believed to be from Kilkenny but is rumoured to be a businessman from the region.

The original dancefloor, made of Canadian maple, is still in place. The site itself covers over 600 sq. metres.
