Hundreds of runners descend on Kilkenny in bid to conquer the Stook Flying Mile

HUNDREDS of Ireland’s bravest runners are making their way to Kilkenny tomorrow to take on the fastest timed road mile on the circuit – the Stook Flying Mile.

The signature feature of the Stook 10 Mile Road Race, the flying mile is mile nine of the Stook 10-mile road race and drops an eye-watering 120 metres in a straight line – the height of Dublin’s Spire.

The current record for the Stook Flying Mile sits at just over the four-minute mark. But that record is now under threat as tomorrow’s race will see Irish Olympian and 2018 National Marathon Champion Lizzie Lee race alongside Gary O’Hanlon, the 2017 and 2018 Irish National Marathon and Kenya’s Freddy Sittuk.

Alongside these running elite, participants of all levels of fitness will run, jog and walk their way up the Stook Hill before setting their own flying mile record to claim a coveted cowbell.

The 2018 Stook 10 Mile Road Race starts at 12pm tomorrow in Dungarvan village. The race is organised by Gowran Athletics Club as a fundraiser for juvenile athletics’ facilities development. A 10 mile and 5k race will run simultaneously, and runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome.
