Kilkenny Credit Unions ready to take on the banks with launch of new current account

By COLIN BARTLEY

SEVEN Credit Union branches in Kilkenny have signed up to a new customer service they hope will beat the banks at their own game.

For the first time ever, full current account services are to be offered to members of the six branches of St Canice’s Credit Union in Kilkenny and St Dominic’s Credit Union in Mooncoin.

The current account services will see members receive a current account card able to provide unlimited point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking and up to five ATM withdrawals a month. Mastercard debit card facilities will be offered to members for the first time ever, as well as standing order, direct debit and overdraft facilities.

The branches of St Canice’s Credit Union who can avail of the new service are Ballyragget, Dunnamaggin, Callan, Graiguenamanagh, MacDonagh Junction and High Street, Kilkenny.

The move has been fully approved by the Central Bank and follows three years work from Irish Credit Unions. The new service has been launched under the banner currentaccount.ie.

Launching the new account, Seamus Newcombe, Chief Executive of currentaccount.ie said: “For the first time, Credit Unions will be able to provide their members with a real choice for their day-to-day financial needs.

“This new service, which will be accessible globally and digitally, will enable Credit Unions to become even more relevant to their members in our ever-increasingly digital world.”
