Burglars arrested after Kilkenny farm drama and Garda chopper chase sent back to jail

Two men are due to reappear in court next month after they were remanded back to prison in relation to a break-in at a Kilkenny farm which resulted in a dramatic manhunt involving the Garda helicopter.

The two men were remanded to Cloverhill Prison in Dublin following a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court.

Edward Carthy (25), of 27 Rioch Street, Kilkenny is charged with burglary and assault, while Jimmy Carthy (20), from the Wetlands Halting Site, is charged with burglary.

A third man was released last Thursday following a special sitting of Carlow District Court. He is to reappear in court at a future date.

A fourth man arrested in relation to the burglary was released after questioning. A file on the matter is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The charges relate to an incident last Monday night when a Kilkenny farmer and his son bravely tackled a group of burglars they discovered them on their farmyard at Ossory Hill, Johnswell.

Edward Carthy was arrested at the farm after being restrained by the farmer and his son. Jimmy Carthy and another man were arrested just hours after the burglary with the assistance of the Garda helicopter, which was working with local gardai on the ground.

The fourth man was arrested the following morning in Thomastown. Gardai are still hunting a fifth man seen fleeing the farm.

Both men have been remanded back to Cloverhill Prison until their next court appearance at Cloverhill District Court on December 10.
