Conviction rates for drivers caught in Kilkenny without a licence among highest in Ireland

Conviction rates in county Kilkenny for driving without a licence are among the highest in the country and well above the national average.

New figures released show 29% of people caught in Kilkenny driving without a licence were dealt with through the courts.

The national average was just 19%, or less than one-in-five drivers caught without a licence being prosecuted.

Just 4% (one-in-25) of people in counties Cavan and Monaghan caught were dealt with through the courts. Only county Cork had a higher conviction rate than Kilkenny with 30% being prosecuted.

The information was released in parliamentary questions posed to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and revealed the conviction rates dealt with through the courts from January 2016 until September 12, 2019.

The information released found 80% of those convicted were fined, 10% were handed a driving ban, while just 4% were jailed.
