Swings and roundabouts: Insurance scammers face up to 10 years behind bars

Insurance scammers face up to 10 years behind bars if they are found guilty of lying under oath as part of a new law being fast-tracked by the Government.

A bill currently before the Dáil is set to be amended in an effort to crackdown on Ireland’s compensation culture, which is causing insurance costs to spiral out of control and threatening businesses across the country.

Under the amendment, anyone found gulity of lying under oath would face prosecution, with a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail or a fine of up to €100,000.

The bill will be debated at tomorrow’s Dáil sitting. It could come into force next year if it receives the support of Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin.
