Conmen pretending to be from Red Cross preying on Kilkenny elderly in fake coronavirus test scam

Some scurrilous people have been praying on South Kilkenny and Waterford’s elderly pretending to be the local Red Cross, in an effort to relieve them of their money.

Late last night it came to the attention of the Waterford Branch of the Red Cross that con-artist were going door-to-door impersonating Red Cross members, asking for €100 for on the spot coronavirus test.

The Red Cross wants to make it quite clear they are not providing the service and if anyone calls to a house or sees these people in action to contact the gardai immediately.

In a statement released on Facebook by the local branch, they said: “It has come to our attention that there are a group of individuals pretending to be us going from door to door targeting the elderly and offering test swabs for the Coronavirus charging a whopping €100.

“Please note that we do NOT offer this service. Please report this to An Garda Síochána as they are scamming the vulnerable.

“Our members when out on duty are required to wear FULL UNIFORM and each member also has to carry their unique membership id card,” the statement concluded.

If anyone witnesses people impersonating the Red Cross or has had people calling to their door claiming to be members of the Waterford Branch of the Red Cross they should contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305 300 without delay.
