Two gardai self-isolating after being attacked at Operation Fanacht checkpoint in county Kilkenny

Two Kilkenny gardai have had been told to self-isolate after being the victims of a horrific attack while on duty over the weekend.

The two female gardai were brought to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny following the incident at an Operation Fanacht checkpoint outside of Callan in the early hours of Sunday morning, with one being treated for suspected bite marks.

A 19-year-old man was stopped at the checkpoint and became unresponsive to the garda questioning. During the course of the stop, the man was found to be in possession of an amount of drugs and it was then things turned for the worse.

The two female gardai tried to arrest the man, but he resisted and in turn attacked the gardai. A call was put out for assistance and when it arrived the man was restrained and brought to Kilkenny Garda Station for questioning.

The two gardai were brought to hospital to be checked, they have since been released, but have been instructed to self-isolate for the foreseeable future.

The teenager was charged with possession of drugs, resisting arrest and threatening and abusive behaviour and he appeared before a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court yesterday evening and was remanded on bail to appear in court again in July.
