Six drug drivers arrested on local roads in little over a day

A drug driver caught speeding on the M9 motorway was arrested by local gardai for a second time in the same day for driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

Gardai in Kilkenny say they are having great success in detecting people driving while under the influence of drugs during the Covid-19 travel restrictions and are urging them to think twice before turning that key.

In last 36 hours, gardai in the Kilkenny-Carlow Garda district have arrested six people on suspicion of drug driving on local roads.

In one instance, a driver was stopped travelling at 163 kph in a 120kph zone on the M9 motorway. They were given a roadside substance test which turned up a positive result for cocaine and benzodiazepines.

After being processed and later released, the same driver was arrested again later that day after driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Blood samples were taken and sent on for analysis.

Gardai are finding it easier to detect road users breaking the law due to the reduced numbers on our roads.

They again urged members of the public to “never drive while intoxicated”.
