Money approved to fund county Kilkenny school’s ambitious expansion plans

Despite being closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic at present, there was good news for a county Kilkenny Primary school after learning its plans to build four new classrooms have been approved.

St Mary’s National School in Thomastown is to get three new special education classrooms and one additional mainstream classroom as part of the expansion.

The school on Maudlin Street in the heart of the town currently caters for more than 450 students currently in 15 classrooms.

The funding for the much needed project was confirmed by Kilkenny’s Minister, John Paul Phelan who said: “I’m delighted for the school that this investment has been approved.

“We’ve been making representations for quite some time. It’s great to get the three special education and one general classroom over the line.

“The funding for the works has been approved under the Additional Accommodation Scheme for 2020 and I’ll be liaising with the Department to ensure that works progress as quickly as possible,” Deputy Phelan concluded.
