LATEST: Five further deaths and 617 new cases of virus, ‘no decision’ yet on extending mid-term break: Department
Five more people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 617 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.
The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 1,821. There are now 40,703 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily breifing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 123 are in Dublin, 107 in Cork, 42 in Meath, 36 in Kerry, 35 in Galway with the remaining 274 cases located across 21 other counties.
The latest cases were confirmed as Department of Education this evening said “no decision has been taken” in relation to extending school closures over the mid-term break.
The Department was responding to a story in the Irish Independent which stated that the Cabinet has discussed the idea of closing schools for an additional week and that a decision to do so is “expected”.
A spokesperson for the department said the evidence so far indicated that schools have reopened safely. They said there had been significant investment to support all infection prevention and control measures recommended by the public health authorities.
Schools are due to close for the mid-term from Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30.
