Five-in-a-row! Kilkenny comes out top yet again as cleanest place to live in Ireland

Kilkenny has done the five in-a-row!

The Marble City has once again been deemed cleanest of the 40 towns and cities in Ireland surveyed by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).

Kilkenny topped the IBAL litter rankings for a record fifth time and received straight A’s across the board. It finished at the top of the table, edging out Athlone, Killarney, and Portlaoise.

An Taisce, who conducts the surveys on behalf of IBAL, praised Kilkenny saying: “Again Kilkenny comes up shining!

“It wasn’t just the following sites which consistently scored so well, but even the series of interconnecting laneways between the streets and medieval area were excellent – this is often not the case in other towns/cities throughout the country,” IBAL added.

All the areas inspected in Kilkenny received A grades from the report, including the Medieval Mile Museum, Kilkenny Castle Park and Rose Garden, Kilkenny Park Run Trail, N77 Approach from Athy,  R693 Approach from Thurles, Abbey Square Car Park,  High Street, Banks of River Nore, Upper and Lower John Street, and the  M9-N10 Carlow – Kilkenny Link Road, all of which were deemed virtually litter free.

On hearing the result, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Andrew McGuinness, said: “This is another fantastic performance for Kilkenny, particularly during this difficult time, adding to its numerous achievements on the national stage.

“These awards cannot be achieved without the ongoing investment of Kilkenny County Council in keeping Kilkenny City clean and litter free.  The result is also a huge tribute to the work of the Kilkenny City Area staff who work tirelessly everyday to ensure the citizens of Kilkenny City wake up every morning to a clean and litter free City,” Cllr McGuinness added.
