LATEST: Three more deaths and 1,000 new cases of virus, Government leaders meet tomorrow to discuss Level 5 lockdown

A further three people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 1,000 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The virus has now claimed a total of 1,841 lives in the Republic. There are now 47,427 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latst cases is as follows: 254 are in Dublin, 102 in Meath, 88 in Cork, 81 in Cavan, 75 in Galway with the remaining 400 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

The latest cases were confirmed after it emerged earlier today that NPHET has advised the Government to move the country to Level 5 restrictions for a period of six weeks.

Speaking at an EU summit in Brussels, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he will meet fellow coalition party leaders Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan tomorrow to discuss NPHET’s recommendation to put the back under a full lockdown.

The Taoiseach said the Government will give the recommendation “very detailed consideration” and that it will be followed up with “a comprehensive response”.
