Get Brexit ready: Revenue warns Kilkenny businesses that time is running out
Kilkenny businesses who have not fully prepared for Brexit are urged to act now to avoid significant disruption to their international trade.
Over the past two months the Revenue Commissioners has been contacting local businesses they believe may be most impacted by Brexit, while also engaging with trade representative bodies.
Revenue is urging businesses to have their Brexit preparations completed by January 1, 2021, when the UK will formally leave the EU.
More than 3,700 new businesses have registered for an Economic Operators Registration Identification (EORI) number, a registration that allows businesses to import or export with countries outside the European Union. More than 71,000 Irish businesses now have EORIs.
However, industries such as fishing, forestry, construction, and agriculture are not yet sufficiently prepared for Brexit, according to Revenue data.
Revenue Customs Service Cmmissioner Gerry Harrahill said: “There is evidence that some businesses have made little or no plans to manage the negative impacts of Brexit, while others have not thought through the implications at all.
“When it comes to Brexit there is absolute certainty that on January 1, 2021 customs formalities will apply to goods moving to, from or through the UK – excluding Northern Ireland.
“This means that businesses who have not prepared for Brexit or who have not yet fully completed or thought through their preparations will be immediately impacted on 1 January 2021,” Mr Harrahill added.
