BIG CHILL: Snow forecast as temperatures to drop well below zero in Kilkenny overnight

Wrap up well tonight – the mercury is set to plummet to sub zero temperatures in Kilkenny tonight.

Temperatures are expected to fall to -2 degrees overnight and forecasters are predicting flurries of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The global forecasting service Accuweather says tonight will be: “Partly cloudy and cold; a shower in spots this evening followed by a flurry late on.” However, it warns the wind chill factor will make it feel more like -4 outside.

Met Éireann also warned we can expect bitterly cold weather from now until Sunday. And the national forecaster said it could reach as low as minus 10 degrees in parts of the country by Friday.

In its forecast for tonight, Met Éireann said: “It will be dry with clear spells in many areas, however, scattered wintry showers of hail, sleet or snow will continue to affect eastern and southeastern counties. Lowest temperatures of -1 to -5 degrees.”

The national forecaster said the bitterly cold spell will continue into Friday with air temperatures of -5 to -7 degrees and ground temperatures down to -10 degrees.

It added we can expect more snow, sleet and freezing rain tomorrow, making driving conditions hazardous with a high probability of black ice in places.
